“A Sense of Place” was premiered on 25 September 2014 by the Alpaca Ensemble at Gulbrygga in Trondheim. Playing that night were Rik de Geyter, bass clarinet; Marianne Baudouin Lie, cello; Anders Kristiansen, marimba. It was part of a program of my chamber music, presented by Trondheim kommune (the City of Trondheim) and Trefestivalen (the Trondheim Wood Festival). It was the first concert (that we know of!) to take place in this space.

“A Sense of Place” is an improvisational piece which explores the space in which it is performed, through the breathing-rhythms of the players. I composed it specifically for the space in which it was premiered; Gulbrygga is one of the beautiful old timber-built warehouses along the Nidelven river in Trondheim. It was built in the early 1800s, and is being slowly and carefully renovated. We hope that this concert will be the first of many in this beautiful space!
