Sémélé (1996)

James Brown, tenor, and James Smith, theorbo

Program notes

"Sémélé" is the third song of a cycle that I wrote for Isabelle Balot, based on her poetry, in 1996. The original cycle, for tenor, violin, cello, and piano, was titled "Chants d'Amour et de Mort". It was premiered at the United Nations' Bibliothèque Dag Hammarskjöld in New York City, sponsored by the Association Culturelle Francophone de l'ONU (United Nations). The original performers were Patrick Lynch, tenor; Jenny Williams, violin; Yari Bond, cello; and Vladimir Valjarevic, piano.
